If you go to http://www.livejournal.com/customize/ and go to the bottom to click on "Customize selected theme" and then change 'Disable customized comment pages for your journal' to 'No', you get back subject line and proper icon selection. The colors are often ugly and glaring, but if you then go up and click "Style' on the left side under 'Display', click 'expand all' under colors and scroll down to the comments section. I don't know what all the color commands are so I changed both 'Text color on alternating comment bars (one)' and 'Text color on alternating comment bars (two)' to #000000 (which is plain black) and 'Alternating background color for comment bars (one)' and 'Alternating background color for comment bars (two)' to #aaaaaa (which is a grey color).
It's not ideal, but it doesn't make my eyes bleed and I get a subject line and comments. And as long as you have it checked to read journals and communities in your own style you can do the same everywhere. At least till they wreck it more.
