If the timing had been a few seconds different -- literally, seconds, not even minutes -- it would have been. She would have awoken and seen me there, and we'd have a life together now. (And I suppose another secret is that I think I might enjoy this life, here, more than I would that one, but never mind that.)

But I had no way of knowing she wasn't really dead.
