So, we've all got our problems. And, if you don't have any problems, well, I salute you. But the majority of us have some issues. And maybe we don't know what to do about those issues. This is the post for you! Ask for advice! Ask what you should do in the case of: how to ask someone out for the first time, how to make long distance relationships work, how to break up with someone, how to tell someone they look fat in those jeans, anything at all you want advice on!

And one and all can answer, give you advice, speak from experience. We can help each other because frak knows, we've all been through some crap.

And really, this is therapy. We should be play therapist!

Any got advice on how to tell your dad that you're not going to be doing what he and most of your planet expected you to do just because you're supposed to be carrying on the family legacy?

There's always the ever popular middle finger, yo. It's amazin' how much one little gesture can really say!

Throw up the middle finger to my dad? There's...worse ways to go about it, I guess. Still, I think he'd glare a hole in me.

Can you just refuse to talk to him at all? That's how I deal with my mother and her visions of her daughter, the concert pianist.

Yeah, not really. Only because he's coming for graduation and he'd make a point to come and find me. And I feel like I do owe him an explanation.

Seconding this. I haven't talked to my parents for nearly five years now.

Wouldn't that wreck the last bits of relationship we have left?

If you figure it out, tell me. Right now I have my father thinking I'm utterly unsuited, but I know that will pass, and I do not think you should do what I did to make him think that.

Do you have a brother or a cousin you can pass the responsibility on to? ~~He asked, not knowing the massive emo he would cause.~~

I did but he's...dead now, yeah. I think passing the blame there would get me completely disowned from the family deservedly so. I might pass on that.

Prayer, maybe? I've heard that works for some people.

I didn't mean to blame your brother, just to suggest he could carry on the family name more ably than you could. If he's gone, though, he's gone, and I am sorry.

Prayer's usually my remedy, even if it hasn't solved much yet.

My father wouldn't listen when I tried telling him, so I embarked upon a hedonistic lifestyle of excess (and spending his money) for years. He keeps threatening to disown me, but I'm not seeing any follow-through on that end.

If he gives you a hard time, I suggest very very explicit PDA, with persons considered completely unsuitable. If he's anything like mine, he'll very quickly be thrilled that you're out of sight and out of mind.

Now...there's something I might be able to make happen. I'd have to talk it over with my girlfriend and she has to meet my dad first. I think suggesting making out as a greeting might be too much but there'll be plenty of time to shock the frak out of him that weekend.

I don't know, but if you figure it out, I might steal the advice too.

So far, I've been told to flip him off, ignore him and make out with someone in front of him. Maybe a combo of all three?

He didn't happen to intentionally leave you behind to die a horrible, slow, painful death at any time, did he?

Because once they do that, you can get away with aaaannnything.

He did...not. Not yet, at least. So, while I can get away with a lot of stuff without much explanation, this is probably not one of them.

Chances of him going crazy and wandering around the jungle trying to baptize people are pretty slim, too, yeah?

In which case, I got nothin', and will decide that, overall, I guess I got pretty lucky on that whole issue.

I'm going to join the crowd and say if you figure it out, let me know. Has he ever thrown you into any dungeons for disobeying him?

Not yet! Though, we don't really have dungeons and he'd have to have a really good reason for tossing me in the brig since I'm not one of his soldiers.

I wouldn't put that past him though.

I won't end up doing it. I know saying that and following through are two different things but I'm done letting my last name influence my life.
