The Future Freaks Me Out

So, children, what do you want to be when you grow up?

Half marks if you say "redeemed" or "good" or anything cliched like that. No one makes a living just by being redeemed.

That's the answer of the terminally unambitious and small-minded.

How is it unambitious to know one's strengths and limits? If I know that I am poor at creating the finest artistry, but my hands are skilled at wielding a blade, then why should I attempt to be the greatest artist when I lack the talent someone else does have?

I can attempt to be the best swordsman, but it would be foolish to try and matter everything there is to matter. Unless, perhaps, you are of the Elder Race and your life knows no limit. Unfortunately - or perhaps fortunately - I am not, and thus I shall have to limit myself.

How do you know your limits if you aren't willing to put them to the test? What glory is there in being afraid to reach for the stars? I'm not going to limit myself, when I haven't even begun to realize my potential.

One cannot know unless one tries, of that you are correct. I do not think it is fear that drives of what I speak. If I reach for the stars, then I shall not be reaching for the moon. Is that not in itself setting a goal as much as it is setting a limit. I can seek for one thing. Perhaps even a few things, but I cannot reach for all at once.
